The Canadian government yesterday confirmed that it will formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, freeing it from legally binding emission reduction targets that it was expected to miss next year.

As had been widely expected, Environment Minister Peter Kent told reporters in Toronto that the country would exercise its "legal right to withdraw from Kyoto".
